The thumb is a common site of injury especially during sporting activity. The thumb is a critical component of the hand, as pinching, gripping and fine motor activities all need a stable thumb. Thus, it is imperative to seek advice early, to avoid missing injuries that can have a profound impact to the function of the hand in the future.
Injuries can include:
- Bony injuries such as fractures or avulsion type injuries (eg. Bennett fracture)
- Ligament injuries (collateral ligament injuries – skier’s thumb)
